Get Windows paint to read Jpegs

After a disastrous attempt to install the Windows Me upgrade on my PC (which runs Windows 98) I formatted the hard drive and did a clean install of Windows 98 followed immediately by the upgrade. Since then, my Paint accessory no longer recognises Jpeg files. I attempted to change the association so that Jpeg files open with Paint rather than Image Preview, but I received the error message: 'This is not a valid bitmap file, or its format is not currently supported'.

Paint will only allow me to save images in a bitmap format with the following choices: monochrome bitmap, 16-colour bitmap, 256-colour bitmap and 24bit bitmap. I spent nearly an hour on the phone to Microsoft which was unable to solve the problem.

It is not widely known that the Windows Paint accessory can display other image file formats besides bitmaps and PCX files. In fact, Windows Paint only comes with support for BMP, DIB and PCX files, and can only save in BMP and DIB formats. Other image formats are only supported if additional graphics file filters have been installed. If Microsoft Office 97 or later is installed, Paint can make use of the filters which are installed with it (although the extra file types don't appear in the list of types in the Open dialog box).

Apparently, a filter that allows both opening and saving of Jpeg files comes with Microsoft Plus 98. Perhaps you had installed Plus on your original Windows 98 setup?
